From a medical and safety perspective, we would like to highlight the following key considerations to help you stay healthy and prepared for both conference activities and optional outdoor experiences.

General health and well-being:

  • Please do not travel if you are unwell. Consult your primary care provider if you have symptoms or concerns regarding existing medical conditions.
  • Ensure you are up to date on routine vaccinations.
  • Maintain good hand hygiene, especially in group settings.
  • Choose healthy, balanced meals where possible.
  • Continue your routine exercise regimen as appropriate.
  • Prioritize rest and sleep.
  • If consuming alcohol, do so responsibly and in moderation.
  • Stay connected with family, friends, and colleagues.
  • Take time to support your mental well-being.

Environmental and outdoor health considerations:

While most conference activities are indoors, optional outdoor activities (e.g., hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking) may involve environmental exposure.

Tick exposure:
Ticks are common during Vermont summers and may carry infections such as Lyme disease, Babesiosis, Anaplasmosis, and Ehrlichiosis.

  • Use insect repellent (DEET or similar)
  • Wear long sleeves and pants in wooded or grassy areas
  • Perform tick checks after outdoor activity
  • Shower soon after returning indoors
  • Refer to the CDC guidance listed above for more information

Heat and hydration:
Outdoor activity may increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness.

  • Stay well hydrated (water preferred)
  • Take breaks in shaded or cool areas
  • Avoid overexertion during midday heat
  • Seek air-conditioned spaces if overheated
  • Please refer to the heat guidance document noted above

Water safety (lakes and rivers):

  • Follow all posted safety guidance
  • Avoid water with advisories or discoloration
  • Use appropriate safety equipment (e.g., life jackets)
  • Shower after freshwater exposure when possible

Outdoor activity safety:

  • Wear appropriate footwear and protective equipment
  • Stay on marked trails
  • Be mindful of terrain, weather, and personal limits
  • Travel with others when possible
  • For biking: use a properly fitted helmet and select trails matching your skill level

Allergies and air quality:

  • Seasonal pollen may be elevated
  • Bring necessary medications (e.g., inhalers, antihistamines)
  • Limit exposure if symptoms worsen
